Captured from my back garden in Christchurch, Dorset, this image reveals the breathtaking filaments of the Veil Nebula, the expanding remains of a massive star that exploded in a supernova around 10,000 years ago.
Located approximately 2,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, the delicate ribbons of glowing gas stretch across more than 100 light-years of space. The intricate blue and red filaments are shockwaves racing through the interstellar medium at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, exciting oxygen and hydrogen atoms to produce their vivid colours.
Although invisible to the naked eye, hours of carefully guided long-exposure imaging and meticulous processing reveal this extraordinary celestial structure in remarkable detail.
